Libia Pérez de Siles de Castro and Ólafur Árni Ólafsson
Overview in Malaga
Until March 11 Libia Castro & Ólafur Ólafsson show a small retrospective of their work of the last four years at CAC Málaga. It consists of elements, documents and portraits of what they found in this period, of where they intervened, from a committed position in the world of today.
Fernando Frances, director of CAC Málaga, says in the accompanying catalogue:
“Libia Castro and Ólafur Ólafsson present a series of works in which a constant element is their critique of the world today, and in which humour co-exists alongside aspirations for social improvement in a scenario full of dynamism and realism.
Their cities, Málaga and Reykjavik, both play a fundamental role in the themes of their work. Even though they live in the Netherlands, these two artists are aware of the current situation in their places of birth and issue direct messages using art as their vehicle regarding those aspects that they believe could be improved on in these two points in Europe that are so remote from each other. Consequently, this project in the Málaga Contemporary Art Centre is imbued with positivism and hopes for a better future, and draws on experiences from the artists’ own lives.
From the point of view of their artistic practice, these artists
use still images, installations, video and sound projects to transport
the spectator to very different social realities with the intention
of arousing in him new concerns that are different to those that normally
preoccupy them. With their works, the artists attempt to take the
spectator to new realms of reflection and to question truths that
are generally accepted as
absolute without reasonable doubts ever being raised as to their veracity.
Immigration, seasonal employment, cultural differences, the world of work and globalisation are the basis of the work of this duo of artists; issues that prompt a vision of art that aims to reflect the world today in all its brilliance and its darkness that is so close to artists and their audience alike.”
