Prix de Rome:

Libia Castro and Ólafur Ólafsson shortlisted

The French Prix de Rome was founded in 1666 by Louis XIV but in 1808 another was set up in the Netherlands by Louis Napoleon. Since 1870, the prize has been administered by the Rijksakademie van Beeldende kunsten – the State Academy of Visual Arts. In 1985, the scope of the prize was expanded to include new media and practices in both art and architecture, focusing on younger artists.

Four artists or artist groups are shortlisted and receive funding and assistance to produce new work for an exhibition from which the final winners are picked. The exhibition will be held in De Appel CAC Amsterdam and in Witte de With CAC Rotterdam, opening 9 of may 2009.

This year the Icelandic-Spanish artist pair Libia Castro and Ólafur Ólafsson have been selected for the shortlist along with Rossella Biscotti (IT), Nicoline van Harskamp (NL) and Sara Rajaei (IR).
